Vigan and Pagudpod, Ilocos Sur, Ilocos Norte, Philippines (Feb 20, 2017)

February 20, 2017.

My aunt and her officemates decided to go to Vigan and Pagudpod at Ilocos Sur, Ilocos Norte, Philippines a few days ago and I just tagged along with them. The scenery on both places is truly breathtaking. I saw a lot of really old buildings and whatnot, we’re talking about hundreds and hundreds of year old structures that was a product and greatly influenced of our countries first colonizers, the Spaniards. Most Filipinos don’t know this and foreigners also think that Filipinos are direct descendants of Hispanics (except of course for a few who really has some Spanish blood in their veins living here in the Philippines) but truth is, Filipinos were just forced to line-up during the Spanish-era in our country and baptized our forefathers with Spanish-sounding surnames. My name (Arvin) sounds “American”, my middle name is Chinese, which is “Ang” (my granddad on my mother’s side is pure Chinese. He immigrated here in the Philippines a very long time ago.) and my surname sounds “Hispanic”, which is “Valenzuela” but we Filipinos still belong to the “Malay” race. Some say we’re pacific islanders. Back in the dinosaur age, Filipinos doesn’t even use surnames, they call themselves with who their father is, like, “Ding Dong” son of “Bong Bong”. Foreigners will think this actually sounds really funny. There’s a guy in this world named, “Bong Bong”, like a stoner guy and his son is “Ding Dong”, sounds like a doorbell but those names are actually the true and authentic Filipino names that we have. That’s enough for today’s history lesson, people. 😀

Cheers,
Vin
